I just got done testing them with an old pioneer integrated and the rock. I ordered poly caps and did a minor repair on the veneer. I can't believe how efficient they are. I'm going to eventually put these in my living room in place of my bozaks. Will eventually use an sca35 with them.

Heathkit AS-101 score at SA (Altecs in disguise) Ah, finally a 'big' score! :) I happened into the local SA and saw a pair of speakers as big as doghouses. Upon further inspection, they looked interesting so I researched them (this was last night). Harumph. So there I appeared, 5 minutes...

OK, you've provided me the impetus to finish the cabinets I'm doing for my AS 101 drivers. I have the new caps and attenuators, just haven't gotten off my behind to get busy. Have fun, those look nice!

Right now an allied 445 receiver. About 14 solid state watts but I will eventually go tube. Listening all afternoon. Got a Jerry Mulligan verve pressings on a dual 1009sk with Shure m91. They are seriously kicking ass with the old caps. It's like they needed to break in.

I'm here to help. I moved bozaks out to put these in and couldn't believe the weight difference.

You may need to clean the L pads, adjustment during play is very noticeable, if not then they need cleaning…changing crossover caps was also a big improvement.
Im building Zilch‘s Z19 crossovers for mine as we speak…
Stripped the cabinets, some beautiful oak underneath…

Yes, bring them up to par as stock speakers and enjoy them.

The L pads seem quite functional, wide open the horn is really bright. I've been running them on 7 out of 10 which sounds pretty natural right now. What did you strip yours with?

That's pretty much the plan. Replacing caps seemed like a good idea and I did order Dayton's but as I have been using the speakers all day today, they just keep sounding better. Really at this point I'll be surprised if I hear much improvement with new caps. Also do you guys know if going to a quality airchoke would make any difference?

These don't look pristine by any stretch and the front room instillation isn't perfect, however this has to be the best 400.00 I've ever spent on speakers. My girlfriend helped me get them in the house. She actually likes the grillcloth!

If the capacitors are original it‘s unlikely that they all are in spec, if you have a way to check them I’d recommend doing so….
Used scrappers (different sizes) to strip the old finish off, didn’t want to use chemical stripper because it soak into the wood, and sand paper is just too slow.

I've ordered the caps. I routinely replace caps when I buy older speakers, I was just surprised at how good these sound with the old ones. This is usually not the case for me.

The caps came in today and it seems to make a pretty significant difference. For one I need to run the level controls on the crossovers at about 6 instead of 7. Also originally the left channel was quieter. I thought that my ancient allied receiver was the culprit but not so. Channels are quite balanced. My hearing is not exactly great but these are big time keepers. I really enjoy hearing what would have been way out of my price range when these were new.

That’s excellent, figured there would be some change, mine woke up so to speak…I’m still a couple of day away from finishing the Z19 crossovers for mine, will be interesting to compare the original design with the Z19, here’s an in progress phot:

Thanks, they are a variation of Altec model 19s designed by Zilch, and are bi-amp capable, here’s an information thread:
Z19 Crossover
Express interest in a variant of the Altec Model 19 crossover I developed nearly three years ago has motivated me to build up a pair. It was originally posted on Lansing Heritage Forum here...
