Australian author Kerry Greenwood is a versatile writer with a strong talent all across the board, having gained both commercial and critical success over the years. From crime novels to children’s books, she has managed to find a wide-ranging, ever building audience from a number of different readers. This is something that should continue in the years to come, as her writing career is growing from strength-to-strength.
Early and Personal Life
Born on the 17th of June, 1954, Kerry Greenwood has managed to create a well regarded writing career set around her love of historical fiction. Originally from the city of Melbourne, it was her upbringing that was to inform much of her later career as an author, as she found her voice and her flair for literature. Setting up much of what was to come, she immersed herself within a number of different genres, getting a rich and varied set of materials to work with. Attending the University of Melbourne, she gained herself a Bachelor of Arts in English, along with a Bachelor of Laws as well. This all helped to inform her work greatly too, as she managed to hone and craft her skills during this time to good effect. After graduation she moved on with her career, becoming the writer that her many fans know her as today.
Currently living in Australia still, she continues to write to this day, building her extensive bibliography more and more. Residing there with her partner, she manages to gain both critical and commercial success every year. With more books set to arrive in the future, this looks like a trend that’s set to carry on, with no signs of stopping anytime soon.
Writing Career
Creating her first novel in 1989, Kerry Greenwood first introduced the world to the character of Phyrne Fisher, the eponymous detective of her long-running mystery series. Set in the 1920’s of Melbourne, this high-status flapper girl from humble origins is smart as she is quick-witted. This was to then pave the way for a series of twenty books and counting, along with a television series of the same name as well.
Producing the long-running television adaptation of her series, Kerry Greenwood gained further media exposure for her ABC1 show based around the exploits of Phyrne Fisher. Aired in 2011, it managed to bring these distinctive mysteries to an even wider audience, allowing her to further manage and build her reputation. There is now a second series as well, which subsequently aired in 2013 due to it’s popularity and appeal.
Her other series have also been gaining traction over the years as well, with her Corinna Chapman series which she begun in 2004. The Delphinic Women was also a short-lived, but well received collection of three novels written in the mid-nineties as well. That’s not to mention her many solo works and anthologies, which she has also been slowly amassing over the years too. Getting critical attention for her efforts too, she is not without her fair share of awards either, gaining her first on in 1996 with the Aurealis Award. Over the years she has received around twelve different awards and counting, many in such diverse field as children’s books for her contributions there. As her popularity looks set to carry on with more works on the horizon, it looks like this will continue into the foreseeable future.
Earthly Delights
First publishing the book in 2004 through the Poisoned Pen Press publishing house, this was to mark the initial entry into the Corinna Chapman series of novels. Creating the character and the tone it managed to set-up the premise for much of what was to come, whilst simultaneously telling a compelling mystery in the classic sense. With the initial cast established, it provides a distinctive ambiance that became idiosyncratic for this particular series, giving its readers a clear idea of what to expect.
Once again set in Melbourne, Australia, this particular novel focuses on the plight of one Corinna Chapman who decides to leave her past life behind her, as she breaks away from her nasty husband and lackluster career in accounting. Setting up her own bakery named the ‘Earthly Delights’, she manages to find herself thrown into the deep-end after a dead addict ends up on her doorstep. It is then that she comes up against a cast of colorful characters, many of whom reside in the apartment block she lives in, as she looks into the mystery and solving the case. Why did the body of the heroin addict find itself into her bakery and who could do such a thing, especially to Corinna as she has only just moved there? Will she be able to solve the case in time, or will the killer strike again and could Corinna Chapman herself be in some form of danger? What will become of them all as they solve the mystery surrounding ‘Earthly Delights’?
Cassandra
First published through Mandarin Press in 1995, this was to be the second in the series of Kerry Greenwood’s ‘Delphic Women’ series of novels. Continuing the themes and ideas of the first, this further establishes the world and the tone that came before, building upon the foundations that were previously laid down. Part of a trilogy of novels, it’s an ideal book for anyone wanting to look into early entries into the career of this author and to those hoping to gain further insight into her development as a writer.
Featuring the story of Cassandra, a princess with flowing golden hair and gifted with the ability to tell prophecies, who, along with Diomenes faces the prospect of being puppets of the gods. As the city of Troy burns they must come to terms with the passion they feel for one another, as they must overcome the obstacles placed before them by two dueling immortal gods. Amidst the flames of the burning city they must find each other and prevent the powers that be from taking a hold over their lives in the process. Will they be able to find themselves and each other? Can they exercise free-will in spite of those that seek to control them? What will become of the fate of Cassandra?

BOOK OF THE MONTH:
How exciting is this? An actual short story collection from Lee Child, stepping outside of the world of Jack Reacher. This is the first non-Reacher short story collection he's written, with 20 crime stories in this. Really looking forward to this one. It's actually out September 3rd, but we're very excited for it so wanted to highlight it now.
